Scrip Program The Scrip program will be an ongoing fund raiser!  When we have reached our goal for the Youth Endowment Fund, the Scrip program and Kroger monies will be applied to the next designated project.  Your purchases have raised $1700 since we started using the SCRIP program! Please see the white binders at the church entrances or office for order forms, information and available retailer coupons (there are no coupons at the moment).  Turn your order in at the office during the week, or you can hand them in after church to the Scrip representative at the back of the sanctuary. QUILTS FROM 1987 FOUNDSILENT AUCTION PLANNED

Matthew 6: 20 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.”

Peg Schemmel, wife of the then-pastor of our church, Wade Schemmel, chaired a program called a “Quilt-O-Rama.”  She asked that anyone with a quilt that they would like to show, display it in the auditorium for a program on April 4, 1987. Interest was so great that soon after, Peg led a program in which each family was given a cotton square with the instructions to decorate it in any way that they wished. The squares were to show the life of the church influencing or leading their life, what the church meant to their life, their involvement in the church, some aspect of the teachings found in the Bible, or a Bible story. They could sign the squares. Response was very good and ten beautiful quilts were made using the squares decorated by the ladies of the church.

These quilts were found lying in a cupboard in the Educational Building. Remembering the words of Jesus, it was decided to do something with them instead of letting them rot. They are beautiful works of art made by many loving hands, many who are no longer with us. Some of the squares have relatives who are still active within the church and others still remember when they made a square. They also remember when these quilts were displayed in the halls and the auditorium of our Educational Building.

There will be a silent auction held during the month of September. Quilts will be displayed outside each door of the sanctuary and the chapel. There will also be some quilts in the auditorium. Attached to each quilt will be a number and within the auditorium will be a table with an identical numbered folder. If you are interested in obtaining one of these quilts, write your name and the amount you wish to bid on the sheet within this folder. The last highest bid will receive the quilt.

All monies raised with this project will go to the Youth Endowment Fund.  If you have any questions, contact Keith May, James Mullins, or Joyce Gilberg.

SENIOR-RETIREE LUNCH

After taking the summer off, the cooks are busy preparing the menus as the senior lunch program begins.  This program of fellowship and food is open to all senior and retired members and their friends.  There is no cost for the meals but a donation can be made to help offset the cost of preparing the meals.  So there is enough food for all, reservations are appreciated and can be made by calling the church office (419-629-2502).  Help with transportation can also be provided by calling the church office.

Join us at noon on Sept. 16th as we bid farewell to summer.

PAGE TURNERS BOOK CLUB

Page Turners meet the third Monday of each month at 1:00 in the church library.  The book selection for September is “Eat, Pray, Love”, a 2006 memoir by American author, Elizabeth Gilbert.  This readable, sometimes funny, memoir chronicles the author’s year long travels across the world in search of pleasure and balance.  Recently released in local theaters, the group has decided to view the film as well as read the book and then discuss both at the September meeting.

Books chosen for future review include the following:

·    October—“Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet” by Jamie Ford

·    November—“House Rules” by Jodie Picoult

·    December—one of Richard Paul Evens’ Christmas books

·    January—“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” by Stieg Larson

·    February—“A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini

Listing the book selections ahead gives everyone the opportunity to pick and choose the books that interest them, plenty of time to read the book and then participate in the review. If reading is one of your favorite pastimes, plan to come Sept. 20th and be part of the discussion.

BEACON FUND

The Beacon Fund is still running low on money.  It costs about $200 a month to print and mail The Beacon.  I would appreciate contributions to replenish this fund.  Approximately 625 Beacons are mailed out each month to church members and friends of St. Paul.

Tom Braun, Bookkeeper

NEW HISTORICAL DISPLAY

The first Beacon edition, January 1948, and the 1951 Sunday School dedication program may be viewed in the east hallway of the Educational Building across from the historical display case.  The preservation and framing of these two pieces were made possible by memorial gifts from Evelyn (Bassler) Baur and Tom Bassler, children of Dr. Emil Bassler, our pastor from November 1947 to January 1968.

Rev. Bassler began The Beacon and was the pastor when our Sunday school building was built.  The Beacon still exists today, more than sixty years later, keeping our congregation informed about the news of St. Paul Church.  The Sunday school building will be sixty years old next year and still serves as a vibrant part of St. Paul's ministry.

Dr. Bassler’s farewell message printed in the February 1968 Beacon has also been preserved and framed and can be viewed in the display case.

Thank you to Evelyn Baur and Tom Bassler for their generosity and thoughtfulness that made possible the preservation of these important historical St. Paul documents.

REV. REBECCA ERB STRANG INSTALLED AS PASTOR OF ST.  PAUL CHURCH

On Sunday afternoon, November 22, Rev. Rebecca Erb Strang was installed as pastor and teacher of St. Paul United Church of Christ, New Bremen.  The installation service began with an impressive processional of clergy participants wearing their robes and red stoles. John Voress, congregational president, welcomed those in attendance.  Rev. Bill Youngkin, former interim pastor at St. Paul, gave the sermon after which Rev. Dan Busch, Association Minister of the Northwest Ohio Association, presided at the official installation of Rev. Erb Strang.  Rev. Jean H. Erb (retired) then gave the charge to her daughter and to the congregation.

The sanctuary was filled with beautiful sunlight and the melodious sounds of the congregation singing familiar hymns.  A reception for all was held in the Assembly Room following the installation service.

Rev. Erb Strang began her pastorate at St. Paul on August 1, 2009.

ST. PAUL PARSONAGE 100th ANNIVERSARY

Early in January of 1909, the congregation of St. Paul Church in New Bremen decided to build a new parsonage.  This would be the third parsonage for St. Paul’s clergy.  The first parsonage was built in 1835 at a cost of $198.00 and was a two story 20 ft. x 30 ft. building constructed to entice a fulltime minister to this new and growing community.  In 1852 the congregation built a larger brick structure to accommodate the needs of the Rev. Borchers and his family.  In 1909  when the present parsonage was planned, the 1852 building was sold to Herman Laut for $135.00 and moved across the street and remains in use there today as an apartment building.

Construction of the third parsonage began in the spring of 1909.  Herman Schaefer, a local contractor, received the contract for $5,100.00.  The parsonage was near completion by August 20, 1909.  The St. Paul trustees added sandstone walkways in front and around the new parsonage in September of that year and dedicated the building on October 10, 1909.  The parsonage was built for a total cost of $8500.00.

The 1909 parsonage is a Sears home.  Sears began selling home kits in the early 1900s.  Everything needed to build a home timbers, hardware, even the nailscould be purchased from Sears and included in the kit. The materials were shipped to the buyer in about two weeks time via the railroad.  The buyer was responsible for moving the materials to the building site and assembling the house.

An advantage of a Sears home kit was the use of the newest building materials available at that time and the ability to include electricity, indoor plumbing and central heating in the structure.  Sear’s homes could be modified with the owner’s own design with blue prints submitted to Sears.  Sears would then ship the appropriate materials needed to build the house.

The 1909 parsonage has been well maintained by St. Paul's congregation and the pastors who have lived there.  A garage and tool shed have been added to the rear of the house.  Aluminum siding was added to the structure in the mid 1970s.  Major renovations totaling over $100,000 were accomplished in 2001 and 2002 with the addition of air conditioning, a new heating system, new roof, replacement windows, front door, the creation of a master bedroom suite, and the addition of a handicapped-accessible bathroom downstairs.

HISTORICAL DISPLAY CASE

Check out the historical display case in the east hall of the Educational Building.  Pictures and artifacts displayed there show our church’s long and rich history.  Frames, acid-free matting, conservation glass, and encapsulation of some items were used to protect and preserve the pieces.

Thanks to Delores Stienecker for donating her time and talents to mat and frame the pictures and to Delores and Joyce Holdren for arranging the display.

[Historical note]:  The dedication of this display case with storage cabinets below took place on March 21, 1982.  This was made possible through the Project of the Year and a bequest from Lina Brucken who taught Sunday School for 42 years and was the Sunday School Superintendent for 25 years, from 1922-1947.  Roettger Hardwood of Kettlersville, OH, built the cabinetry.
