ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING

On Sunday, February 26, 2012, the annual congregational meeting will be held immediately following the morning worship service.  At this time reports will be reviewed and any other appropriate business will be considered.  It is important that St. Paul members participate in directing the programs and ministry of our church.  We are counting on you.

E-BEACON

The complete Beacon is now posted monthly on the church web site, stpaulnb.org, in .pdf format. If you would prefer to receive this newsletter via e-mail each month instead of regular mail, please call the church office at 419-629-2502 or e-mail the office at stpaulnb.org to be added to our e-mail list.  This will help reduce the printing and postage costs associated with mailing The Beacon.

PAGE TURNERS

The Page Turners have chosen The Book Thief by Markus Zusak as the February selection.  Published in 2007, this is a story set in Germany during WWII.  Liesel is a young foster girl scratching out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she cannot resist—books.  With the help of her foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during the bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement.  Anyone interested in discussing this book is welcome to meet in the Library on Monday, February 20th, at 1:00 p.m.

The book selection for March will be Caleb’s Crossing by Geraldine Brooks.

SALT:  SUMMER ADULT LEADERSHIP TRAINING

The Church Council of St. Paul UCC has included in the 2012 budget a line item for SALT: Summer Adult Leadership Training.

SALT is a program in which young adults ages 18-25 (and have been out of high school for one year) are hired to work fulltime at St. Paul for nine weeks in the summer. SALT leaders will assist with youth ministries, Vacation Bible School, visitation of homebound, worship leadership, changing light bulbs, office assistance, and any other places of need within the life of our congregation.

SALT also has an educational component. SALT folk will meet with me and other program staff weekly for book discussion, Bible study, and planning the week ahead. The SALT program hones the organizational skills of young adults. It makes space for young people to better articulate their faith. Students learn how to plan, implement and evaluate programs.

SALT serves as a program that allows young adults to transition from being teenagers at St. Paul to being adult disciples. It gives students hands-on experience of ministry in our congregation and the community.

The 2012 budget has allowed the hiring of two young adults for SALT for next summer. My hope and prayer is that we will be able to meet and exceed this goal: so that no student who applies to SALT will be turned away. I have known SALT folk who have gone on to pursue fulltime ministry as a career. I have also known SALT folk who take their summer experience and translate it to a life of service in the community.

As you prayerfully consider your financial gift to St. Paul United Church of Christ, you are invited to reflect upon how SALT will grow our congregation and grow disciples.

Blessings,

Becky Erb Strang
