PROJECT OF THE YEAR 2010

(July thru December)

As most know, our project of the year was two-fold.  From January through June, the Youth Endowment Fund was our main focus and will be an ongoing mission.  From July through December we have targeted Agape in St. Marys.  With their move to a much larger building, their needs have changed and enlarged.

On a recent visit to Agape by the mission team and congregation members, areas where St. Paul might be of some help were discussed.  Kathy Bayless, Agape’s director, asked if St. Paul would be responsible for establishing a small chapel area within their old complex.  This area would then be available for their clients who could rest, pray and meditate.

What can YOU do?  A wall will need to be built, painting done, window treatment completed, lighting improved and remnant carpet installed.  If funds are available, a small amount of landscaping will be done.

Envelopes are available in our church pews.  Please be sure to mark your donation “Agape Chapel.”  This is an exciting local mission project.

You can donate some supplies, you can do work, you can pray for this mission project, or you can help with funds.  What an exciting time as St. Paul reaches out our hand of faith to others with action!

Questions?  Call John Gilberg, Ann Kuhn, Bev Poppe, or Amy Scheer.

AGAPE CHAPEL PROJECT UPDATE

Proposed chapel area prior to renovations

Moving Forward

Volunteer Roland Dicke has begun to construct the new wall in the chapel area at Agape in St. Marys.  Electric outlets and additional wiring are the next project.  A church member, knowledgeable in this area, has volunteered to complete this important task.  After this, the wallboard will be installed.  On the advice of Jerry and Cindy Newman, a ceiling fan with lights will be installed.  The project is moving forward with your help.  Monies given, time and talents shared, will all help to create an inviting, comfortable place to worship.

NIN (NEIGHBORS IN NEED)

Neighbors in Need is a special mission offering of the UCC that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States.  One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministries; two-thirds of the offering is used by UCC’s Justice and Witness Ministries on issues such as the federal budget, voting rights, healthcare, immigration and direct service projects.

Many of us wonder how we can really make a difference in the world.  How can we work for world peace, end hunger?  A gift to NIN is something concrete that we all can do.  It allows our church’s voice to be heard and our caring to be felt.

These monies will be collected the month of September.

DISASTER KITS DELIVEREDTO MILWAUKEE, WI

During the month of July I asked for your help once again in preparing disaster clean-up kits and personal care kits because of the continuing need.  Following are two notes from Rev. Jeanette Tangeman that were posted in the NWOA e-mail newsletter, “The Vine.”

July 24, 2010:

Thought I would let the generous people in the congregations know why it is so necessary to have clean-up and personal hygiene kits available.  Yesterday evening (Friday) Terry received a call from the Ohio Conference Facilitator for Disaster Response, Jim Ditzler.  This morning (Saturday) Terry left with 684 clean-up kits and 100 personal care kits heading to Milwaukee, WI, where they just experienced major flooding.  Since we have the kits on hand and the trailer and equipment handy, an immediate response is possible to help our brothers and sisters wherever and whenever the need arises.  Thanks again to everyone who makes this happen.

July 27, 2010:

Just to let you know that Terry left again this morning with an additional 716 clean-up kits for Milwaukee, making a total of 1400!!  This is only possible because our churches have worked together to make certain we have a stockpile when needed.  The first time he went (last Saturday) he was the first helping agency with clean-up supplies to arrive.

So thank you once again for your help.  We have 16 buckets and 6 personal care kits to be delivered to Terry Tangeman.  If you would still like to help with this project, either by filling a bucket or making a monetary donation, please contact a member of the Mission Team.

THANKOFFERING

This article is a partial personal list of the things for which I am currently thankful following my surgery in June.  I was fortunate to have a competent surgeon, skilled, kind nurses and aides, a loving family visiting and numerous friends sending get-well wishes!  How very much the Circle of Friends card and the Satellite B cards with all the familiar signatures did to brighten my days!  Rev. Becky Strang’s visit and prayer along with the prayers from the Prayer Chain were greatly appreciated!

It is now a wonderful feeling to be able to walk without taking along the pole for intravenous feeding and to bend my arm without sending off an alarm system.  Our Thankoffering boxes, along with other church funds, have been the recipient of our gratitude.

What are the blessings for which you are currently thankful?  In November we will be receiving the Thankoffering boxes which will help to support Agape, serving the hungry in Auglaize County, and Heifer International, serving hungry families throughout the world.  If we contribute each time we are thankful for something, by November our Thankoffering boxes will be full.

CANCER ASSOCIATION OF AUGLAIZE COUNTY (CAAC)

Our Council has voted to take up a second offering (after the regular offering) on Sunday, September 12th, for a local, county-wide cancer organization. It is the Cancer Association of Auglaize County, and its sole purpose is to help patients going through the difficult times of treatment for cancer. Some in our own congregation have received help. Unfortunately, many others could have received help, but they did not know there was such an organization. It is hoped that our congregation, at least, will now know where to turn for help.

What does the organization do? It reimburses the costs of getting to and from treatment centers and doctors’ offices, at 20 cents a mile. It offers wigs, surgical bras, turbans and hats, protein supplement drinks (for those losing weight), and help with medications.  Other help is sometimes necessary on an individual basis.

The CAAC is independent of the large organizations, nor does it receive any monetary support, but all who work are volunteers, and every penny stays here in the county. For those who have lost loved ones and want to help others, it is a comfort to know that their donation may help someone they know personally.

The offering will be taken on Sept. 12th. In this time of economic hardship, the CAAC is finding it more and more difficult to continue to offer help to those who come. Funds are alarmingly low. But mission does not always mean the far corners of the earth. Sometimes it means the door just around the corner. Please help us keep that door open.

Remember September the 12th.

CIRCLE OF FRIENDS

Would you like to be part of a ministry that requires no meetings and can be done from the comfort of your own home?  The Circle of Friends is a ministry that enables you to do just that.  Our purpose is to maintain contact with members whose circumstances currently prevent them from being able to participate in church activities.  Our goal is to make sure these people realize they remain an important part of the church family and are being remembered in our thoughts and prayers through greeting cards and personal notes. New people are always a welcome part of this team.  The more people sending notes and cards, the better we are able to maintain our goal of keeping our shut-ins in touch with members of the congregation.   If this is something that interests you, call Kathy Topp (419-629-3347) or Sandy Thieman (419-629-3288) for more information.

GOODSEARCH & GOODSHOP

What if St Paul United Church of Christ - UCC earned a donation every time you searched the Internet?  Or how about a percentage of every purchase you made online went to support our cause?  Well now it can!

Our Sr. High Youth recently took on the sponsorship of a child through Compassion International. His name is David and he is from Honduras. Money earned through GoodSearch and GoodShop will go towards sponsoring David.

GoodSearch.com is a new Yahoo-powered search engine that donates half its advertising revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate.  Use it just as you would any search engine, get quality search results from Yahoo, and watch the donations add up!

GoodShop.com is a new online shopping mall that donates up to 30% of each purchase to your favorite cause. Hundreds of great stores including Amazon, Target, Gap, Best Buy, Kohls, Quill, Office Depot, Staples, eBay, Barnes & Noble and Shutterfly have teamed up with GoodShop and every time you place an order, you will be supporting our Sr. High Youth and their efforts to help a child living in poverty. Double your contribution by buying gift cards through our SCRIP program to use while shopping GoodShop.  And if you download the GoodSearch - St Paul United Church of Christ - UCC toolbar, our cause will earn money every time you shop and search online - even if you forget to go to GoodShop or GoodSearch first!   Add the St Paul United Church of Christ-UCC toolbar at http://www.goodsearch.com/toolbar/st-paul united-church-of-christ-ucc.

Your support is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please contact Michelle Suchland at 419/629-1427 or mthieman@Thieman.com

STAMPS FOR THOSE IN NEED

The children from Serendipity Nursery School (housed at St. Paul) continue to collect used postage stamps.  You may cut them off the letters or let the children practice their cutting skills.  Either way, it is a win-win situation. Those envelopes are also then recycled.  Place the stamps or envelopes in the basket by the drinking fountain in the Educational Building.

The stamps are made into craft projects and sold by people who are mentally and physically handicapped.  Half of the stamps are sent to Bielefeld, Germany, where the handicapped people use them to not only support themselves, but also reach out and give to others in need.  Won’t you help by saving your used stamps?

AUGLAIZE COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY NEEDS SUPPLIES

The Auglaize County Humane Society, located in Wapakoneta, is always in need of supplies to care for all of the animals in their keeping.  The children—3, 4 & 5 year olds—of Serendipity Nursery School learn through this project that even though they are small, they can help, and make a significant difference in these animals’ lives.  We are collecting our “Love Gift” for these creatures of God who need our help.

Items needed are:

Collars

Dry dog food

Old towels

Pet toys

Chew bones

Clorox bleach

Paper towels

Dishwashing soap

Dog leashes

Canned dog & cat food

Blankets, old but useable

Old newspapers*

Needless to say, what they really need are people who can give a loving home to a pet!  When you’re thinking about adding a new member to your family, please think, and go to the Auglaize County Humane Society on Keller Drive http://achs-pets.com/.You will never regret it.  We have adopted five from the shelter.  Think adoption!

*Place in brown paper bag so children may carry them.  The items can be left outside the nursery school room (west side of Educational Building), or call Ann Kuhn at 419-629-2379 for pick-up of items.
